In a timely move as we celebrate SG50 and all things Singaporean, we welcome on-board home-grown label, Stolen! We catch a quick chat with Elyn Wong, the lady behind those flattering, sexy creations.
Hey, Elyn! Welcome to the Trixilini family! Tell us more about Stolen!
Hello! Well, the label name Stolen is inspired by a philosophical teaching of Mahatma Gandhi:
"I suggest that we are thieves in a way. If I take anything that I do not need for my own immediate use, and keep it, I thieve it from somebody else … A thing not originally stolen must nevertheless be classified stolen property, if one possesses it without needing it." - Mahatma Gandhi
It proposes that taking more than what one needs equates to stealing, the Stolen label also believes in the idea of possessing the minimum. Only that which is necessary; nothing gratuitous, and nothing wasted. That also help sets the clean and minimal silhouette of our garments.
The label was birthed 9 years ago but only launched formally 3 years back. Now we are selling in NYC, L.A., China, HongKong, Malaysia and based in Singapore. Everything is designed and produced in Singapore. As a brand, our core philosophy and creative integrity has always been about being authentic, timeless and bold.
What inspires you when creating those lovely pieces?
Architecture is a big influence on me - the Brutalist movement, to be exact. Simple, clean, raw lines move me. I draw a lot of inspiration from structure and forms, art and also from my travels. Interestingly enough, not so much directly from the world of fashion.
Ooh! We heard you're as into sexy backs as we are?!
Yes! The exposed back of the female body: this has become Stolen’s most recognisable signature detail. It reveals, I dare say, the most elegant part of the feminine form. Together with this backless signature feature, our design aesthetics encapsulates the simplicity, sensuality and strength of a modern woman. A quiet confidence.
Sounds like we're going to love Stolen! We can't wait!
